Bush Budget Blunder
02.07.05 (3:10 pm)   [edit]
Today the 2005 budget proposal was released. In an attempt to reduce record deficits the Bush administration has cut money to programs that people rely on everyday. The $2.5 trillion budget doesn't even include the cost of the proposed social security restructuring, a program that is estimated to cost $2.57 trillion in the first ten years. One of the most controversial proposals has grabbed the attention of major airlines. The security fee would be raised to $5.50 per ticket. James May, president of the Air Transport Association said "a tax on travelers is a tax on airlines". Many airlines are currently on the verge of bankcruptcy and have been kept alive by government money, the same government which is now hurting them.
The new budget also includes a $39 million increase in funding for abstinence only education programs. These programs have been proven to be less succesfull as well as misleading. Despite scientific evidence against these programs the Bush administration thought it would be a good idea to give them more money.
Veterans are also being hurt by the new budget which will raise prescription co-pay from $7 to $15. Veterans have served this country and they need support.
The Defense Department budget is less than what was expected. It buys less equipment than planned by the pentagon and instead emphasizes anti-terrorism programs. The budget which was raised by 4.8% still does not include any of $100 billion spent in Iraq this year. By budgeting money used for the war on terror we can control the record deficit and plan for the future.
While making a slight attempt at fiscal responsibility the people who need help and assistance. If the government wants people to join the military they need to support veterans.
